Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Training Course

In this training, workers will learn what hazardous energy is, and how its controlled, what lockout/tagout (LOTO) is, lockout/tagout procedures and specific tagout requirements.

Understanding LOTO Safety

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a crucial safety procedure used in industrial and manufacturing settings to prevent machinery from being powered on while maintenance or cleaning is being performed. This system ensures that employees are protected from hazardous energy sources that could cause injury during servicing or repairs.

LOTO operates in two primary ways:

  • Lockout: A physical lock is placed on equipment or components to block operation, such as locking a power switch or valve in the off position to prevent accidental activation.
  • Tagout: A warning label, sign, or tag is attached to equipment, signaling that it must not be operated due to ongoing maintenance, reducing the risk of unexpected startup.

These methods are often used together for enhanced safety, and advancements in industrial technology have introduced digital lockout systems to further improve workplace protection. Lockout/Tagout is not only a best practice but also a mandated OSHA safety standard, making it a critical component of any workplace safety program.

What you can expect during this course

During this training course, participants learn how to properly shut down and secure hazardous machinery using lockout devices and warning tags to prevent accidental startup. The course covers OSHA regulations, step-by-step LOTO procedures, and hands-on demonstrations to ensure workers can safely apply and remove lockout/tagout controls in real-world scenarios.

LOTO training is required for employees who perform maintenance, servicing, or repairs on machinery and equipment where unexpected startup or energy release could cause injury.
The course covers identifying energy sources, properly shutting down equipment, applying lockout and tagout devices, verifying isolation, and safely removing LOTO controls after maintenance.

OSHA requires LOTO training upon initial job assignment and recommends refresher training annually or whenever workplace procedures or equipment change.
